The HWATC centre has been used canoeing and kayaking for nearly 40 years, originally part funded by Leicester Education Authority via the Leicestershire Schools Sailing/Canoeing Association, then later the Westfield Community College. However in 1995 as a result of changes to outdoor education funding by the government of the day these activities could have ceased in the Hinckley Area. In order to prevent this from happening H.W.A.T.C was formed so that canoeing and kayaking experiences could continue in the area of Hinckley and surrounding districts for then general public. Many of those original 'founders' continue to work with and support the Centre to the present day and we also remain in contact with Westfield Community College. We are very much community based and although we do charge for our services all of our income is spent on keeping the Centre up and running. Our staff basically qualified volunteers who provide their services free of charge from a sense of commitment and the enjoyment of their particular sport. During this time thousands of local people have enjoyed our canoeing, kayaking and sailing courses or have just come along for a taster of the sport or a specific course. The Centre operates a policy of equal opportunity for all, regardless of gender, race or religion. Our services are available to individuals, families and to groups e.g. Scouts, Guides, Schools, Youth Groups and Adult Groups etc. Where We Meet - VIEW MAP We use a very pleasant local lake to give local people and groups the opportunity to try kayaking and open canoeing in a safe and controlled environment. Some of our clients are happy to come occasionally, others weekly, some just for a fun session and some come to enrol in our structured and certified British Canoe Union Canoe or Kayak Courses these also take complete novices to a competent level. A significant number of past students have progressed to the level of qualified coaches and are now teaching or helping with the teaching of others. Although most of our activities are classed as "known risk sports" safety is of paramount importance to us and we are proud of our record, which is clear of any serious accidents or injuries. The Centre Team hope you can come along, meet us and try what we offer in pleasant surroundings and a friendly environment. |
Above you will see a view of the 'Pit,' the majority of our paddling time as a club is spent on this lake. Also we are within 100 metres of the Coventry canal.
